Who the heck knew I was a blogger?

Updated: Sep 21, 2017

Trick question: I'm not. Destin Sparks explained it best when he said,

"Photography is the story I fail to put into words,"

so please bear with me as I begin my journey into the world of rhetoric.

Who the heck am I?

I am Aubrey Garnett. I am a portrait photographer. And I am (kind of) a blogger. I grew up in the amazing state of Texas, but I am currently living in Provo, Utah while I study at BYU to eventually earn a BFA in photography. I really started to get into photography when I was 13 years old, from then on all of my Christmas and Birthday gifts have consisted of photo gear and software.

I graduated high school in the spring of 2017 being 2 people away from the top 10% of my class and with 3 honor cords. I have played basketball roughly since the day I was born but sat the bench all throughout my high school career which sounds sad, yet I loved being a part of a team that was more like a family than anything else. I was also involved in my school's FBLA club and was ranked first in the state for my Sport's Marketing team qualifying us for Nationals. Even with all of those things put together, I never felt like I had accomplished anything or felt like I was enough except for when I was taking pictures. I don't know what it is about it, but I feel at peace when I get to release my artistic energy. The most frustrating part of literary rhetoric for me is that I don't always have the words to describe how I feel, but with visual rhetoric, I can take the picture that I have in my mind for a photo shoot and transfer it through my camera and into a photograph.

What the heck am I blogging about?

Photography, duh! To expand a little more on this topic I will be writing articles from time to time that range from "how to" posts to equipment reviews to behind the scenes work. Growing up I have been blessed with amazingly talented photography teachers and instant access to the world wide web for the better part of my life, through that internet availability I been sufficiently self-educated for the majority of my photography career. That is one thing I believe to be very important in a photographer's life, educate yourself! If you have a question or are curious about venturing into portraiture, landscape, still life, studio, etc research the best way to start at it. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it never killed the photographer (it just slightly injured them). As for me, I am always interested in learning new things which have lead to many sleepless nights spent on youtube searching for photoshop tutorials, gear reviews, and posing guides.

Why the heck am I doing this?

Well, the easy answer would be to tell you that my Writing 150 Professor is requiring it (Professor Furner, if you're reading this, you're the bomb.com). Nonetheless, I will tell you how excited I am to start my very own blog, I had been thinking about beginning one for a while, but never had the push to pursue it. I have always had the desire to keep a journal or to write every once in awhile about mindless things; however, I never felt adequate enough to express those feelings onto paper, like I was ashamed of the way that I write. Now is the time for me to hurdle that obstacle and type out all of my thoughts and experiences that relate to my love of photography in hope to influence and inspire each emerging photographer to embrace their own unique style.

What the heck now?

So I guess the only thing left to do is build up my blog! I hope you'll follow along as I try my hand at this new type of millennial writing and maybe, just maybe you'll learn a thing or two about what I believe to be the best type of self-expression available to our world: the art of photography.

Education is Important

Before attending college, I thought that there was no need to take classes about something that I already knew and was good at. I thought...
